Plastic pollution remains a severe hazard for marine wildlife across Florida, with local regions such as Apollo Beach facing growing risks.

Recent rescues, including a 410-pound manatee trapped in a Melbourne Beach storm drain, reveal how debris threatens vulnerable animals.

Last year alone, volunteers in Lee County cleared over 50,000 pounds of trash from beaches and waterways, much of it plastic harmful to sea turtles, dolphins, and seabirds.

Organizations are stepping up with innovative solutions.

The Florida Aquarium in Tampa has adopted the Plastic Free Ecochallenge, cutting single-use plastics and prioritizing sustainable food sources.

Manatee Lagoon in West Palm Beach hosted educational events encouraging residents to reduce plastic use.

Community action — like attending cleanups and backing environmental protection laws — is essential for a cleaner, safer future for Florida’s coastlines.
